Automotive Research Shows Mechanics Face Lean Times

Market research completed in October 2012 reveals that business conditions for mechanics are weak.

Overall, there has been a decrease of 6% in the overall sentiment of the mechanics industry in  the past 12 months. Whilst 25% of mechanics reported an increase in business, 44% reported that business has remained flat and 31% reported a decrease in business.

Furthermore, smaller workshops (servicing between 10-30 vehicles per month) seem to have been hit hardest with 40% reporting a decrease in business with larger businesses picking up a greater percentage share of the business.

On average mechanics repair 41 vehicles per month while the majority of mechanics expect similar business conditions going forward, the overall outlook suggests the sector is under some pressure.

We will be running the Mechanics Omnibus again in 2013, to find out when, download our 2013 omnibus calendar.

Methodology: A total of 266 mechanics from service and repair workshops across Australia participated in the research. To qualify these workshops had to repair 10 or more vehicles per month. Data has been weighted by state to ensure the sample represents workshops in Australia. Interviews took place from 20th September to 12th October 2012. A quantitative telephone methodology was used.
