Research Reveals Negative Outlook for Vehicle Smash Repairers

This research offers key insights into the changes in the vehicle repair industry over the past 12 months.

On balance there has been a net decrease in the number of vehicles that smash repairers are repairing over the last 12 months. Only 25% of vehicle repair businesses reported an increase in business over the past 12 months, 36% reported a decrease showing that the industry has been slowing by -11%. 39% of smash repairers reported that the number of vehicle repairs has remained the same. However, workshops in regional areas reported a more positive outlook with a 38% increase in the number of vehicles serviced per month. Overall the median number of vehicle repaired by smash repairers is around 40 vehicles per month.

Methodology: A total of 237 smash repairers from paint and panel workshops across Australia participated in the research. To qualify, workshops need to repair 10 or more vehicles per month. Telephone interviews took place from 26th September to 5th October 2012. Data has been weighted by state to ensure the sample represents the population of smash repair businesses across Australia.
